Sustainability
Preserving our past. Protecting our future.
Caring for one of England's oldest hotels means thinking beyond today. From reducing waste and supporting local suppliers to investing in greener operations, we're continually finding new ways to lessen our environmental impact while preserving the character that makes the Maids Head so special.
Small changes,
lasting impact.
Sustainability isn't a single initiative, it's part of how we operate every day. Guided by our vision to be Norfolk's finest for hospitality, we're committed to making thoughtful decisions that benefit our guests, our community and the environment. From the products we source to the way we manage energy and waste, we're always looking for opportunities to do better.

Our Commitments
-
Reducing Single-Use Plastics
We've introduced a range of simple changes that make a lasting difference, including wooden room key cards, refillable bathroom amenities, bamboo toothbrushes and the removal of plastic bottles and straws from our bars and public spaces.
-
Waste & Recycling
From dual-compartment recycling bins in every bedroom to improved waste separation behind the scenes, we're continually working to reduce landfill waste and increase recycling across the hotel. Our housekeeping team carefully sorts recyclable materials to ensure as much waste as possible is diverted from landfill.
-
Energy Efficiency
Operating a historic hotel requires thoughtful solutions. We continue to invest in energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, while smart controls allow us to reduce unnecessary energy consumption in unoccupied rooms without compromising guest comfort.
-
Working Digitally
By introducing digital systems across operations, training, purchasing and HR, we've significantly reduced paper usage throughout the hotel while streamlining the way our teams work every day.
-
Supporting Local Suppliers
From seasonal menus in the WinePress to locally brewed ales, Norfolk spirits and wines from nearby vineyards, we prioritise local producers wherever possible. Supporting regional businesses not only celebrates Norfolk's exceptional produce but also helps reduce food miles.
-
Sustainable Travel
We're making greener travel easier by providing three EV charging points for guests and staff, alongside complimentary Bobbin Bikes for exploring Norwich without the car. We're also proud to be recognised as a Cycle Friendly Hotel.
Sustainable awards
Recognised for sustainable practices
We're proud that our progress has been recognised through nationally recognised sustainability accreditations, but we see these as milestones rather than the finish line.
-
ECOsmart Gold
Recognised by Greengage for our commitment to sustainable hospitality across energy, waste, food & beverage, guest facilities and corporate responsibility.
-
Net Zero Waste Champion
Awarded in recognition of our ongoing commitment to reducing waste and improving recycling throughout the hotel.
