Environmental impact and sustainability
Maids Head Bar which features locally produced spirits, wines, ciders and ales
The brilliant Maids Head team are committed to the environmental impact and sustainability of the hotel.
In 2022 a Sustainability Committee was formed which has generated many initiatives. It is an agenda item on the quarterly Heads of Department meeting and the quarterly Employee Council Meeting (ECM). The Hotel is a Net Zero Waste Champion and accredited Cycle Friendly Hotel.
The hotel is actively implementing procedures to meet the Government’s 2025 sustainability targets for hospitality. We therefore continue to update our pledge to be more sustainable and to find ways to limit our impact on the environment.
Latest Initiatives
We have implemented five waste collection bins. Departments sort waste into food, cardboard, glass, plastic/tins, and general waste. Dual-compartment bins are now in guest bedrooms, one side designated for general waste and the other for recyclable materials. The recyclable waste is sorted into the appropriate collection bins by the housekeeping team at the end of their shifts. This initiative has been highly successful, with enthusiastic participation from all staff members. Single plastics have also been phased out.
The kitchen use different coloured bags for general waste and food waste collected in compostable bags. Recycling also actively taking place. Oil and fat collected fortnightly.
Guests are issued with wooden keycards and eco-friendly guest toiletries from bamboo toothbrushes to renewable toilet rolls are provided. Reception have control of the AC in the bedrooms, turning down on guest departure.
Three universal EV charging points are currently being installed.
Paper waste is greatly reduced now through the use of online systems. Initiatives include Alert65 for kitchen records, MAPAL for staff training, Docusign for HR and ApprovalMax for all POs.
Local producers are championed. We have a wealth of food and drink suppliers on our doorstep and we are proud to support them thereby also reducing food miles.
Our housekeeping and food service teams can make a huge difference and all are to be commended on their commitment.
The whole team are committed to ensuring we do not stand still and strive to set a good example amongst our hospitality peers, which includes working with our partner Classic British Hotels. Hotel Manager, Christine Malcolm, said “our whole team are concerned about sustainability and this forms part of the Hotel’s Vision and Values which all the staff are committed to achieving.”
