About the Maids Head

Where History Meets Hospitality.

Opposite Norwich Cathedral since the late 11th century, the Maids Head has welcomed travellers, royalty and locals alike for generations. Today, its remarkable history blends with contemporary comfort, award-winning dining and genuine Norfolk hospitality.

UK's oldest hotel, in
the heart of Norwich

The Maids Head occupies one of the city's most historic locations, opposite Norwich Cathedral and within easy walking distance of Tombland, Elm Hill and the independent shops. With 84 individually designed bedrooms, a 2 AA Rosette restaurant and historic event spaces, it's a place where every stay feels connected to the city around it.

Hospitality has existed on this site since around 1287, where the Murtle Fish Tavern is first mentioned in Norwich court records. Over the centuries the Maids Head has welcomed royal visitors, served as a bustling coaching inn and witnessed some of the city's defining moments. While its story stretches back more than eight centuries, the hotel continues to evolve, carefully restoring its historic buildings while creating experiences designed for today's traveller.
