On Sunday, 27th July 2025, the Hotel was once again proud to be celebrating Norfolk Day .

Norfolk Day was first introduced in 2018 as a joint venture between the EDP and BBC Radio Norfolk. The aim to celebrate the county’s rich culture, history and local community spirit. Each year the Hotel has supported this celebration with the help of local historian Professor Rob Knee.

Rob has conducted historical talks over the years to sell out audiences. For example, his talks have included members of the Paston Family, including Sir Thomas and Edmund Paston. As well as Thomas Paine and Sir Edward Coke. This year saw Rob perform as Samuel Fuller from Redenhall. He was a Norfolk pilgrim who sailed with his family to the New World on the Mayflower on 15th August 1620.

Rob’s costume talks always resonate with his audiences and reinforce our County’s remarkable past. We have already planned how we will be celebrating Norfolk Day next year! Rob has chosen to present Sir Walter Rye. We are extremely grateful to Rob for his continuing support both of Norfolk Day and for the Maids Head.

The Maids Head and Norwich have much to thank Sir Walter Rye for. As the last Mayor of Norwich, Sir Walter prevented the Hotel from being closed down and sold for redevelopment. You can see a    photograph of Sir Walter in the Reception area of the Hotel. We have also named one of the Hotel’s four Feature Bedrooms after him.

Talks have traditionally been offered free of charge with donations to the Hotel’s charity of the year.
